What are plastics? and Why do we use them?

Plastics are the group materials that can be shaped easily when soft. Plastics are polymers, Polymer is a substance made of repeating units.

Plastic is commonly used because they are really cheap, easy to shape durable and light weight especially in plastic packaging.

Impacts of Plastic

Plastic usage is a massive problem for our planet. We might not realize it, but we are destroying our own planet  by using tonnes and tonnes of plastic which would  get dumped into our beautiful oceans. This affects the sea life. For example, turtles they think that plastic bags are jelly fish so they consume plastic bags which could make them choke and die.

Micro plastics are another issue. Micro plastics are tiny pieces of plastics, sea animals often eat micro plastics as they are too small. but the bad part is that they contain toxic materials.

Ways to reduce plastic:

  • use  reusable shopping bags.

  • Organise school, park, river and beach clean ups..

  • Don't use plastic single use water bottles.

  • Get rid of straws.

  • Pack your lunch in reusable containers

As you can see from the graph, the plastic production began in 1950 and it increased since then. We  had 1.5 tonnes of plastic. however, over many years plastic usage increased. in 2015 world plastic production was 322 million tonnes of plastic. This is a massive increase!
